Downsizing and Design

So, you’re thinking about downsizing? The decision to move to a smaller home can come about for many different reasons. In some cases the kids have all left home and the large family home is no longer needed, or retirement has shifted priorities and a smaller place with less maintenance makes sense. Perhaps there are other reasons at play, some other life transitions going on, or just a desire to minimize and try life in a smaller space. Regardless of the reason, the decision to downsize is a big one and the steps that come next can be overwhelming.

So where should one start in the process of downsizing? First of all give yourself lots of time. Your possessions weren’t accumulated overnight so don’t expect to complete this task in a short time. Kick things off by taking inventory of your things and determine the items that will be essential to keep and those others that you think you can part with. Of course consider your sentimental items along the way and take it one room at a time so the project doesn’t seem so big. Knowing where you are moving can also sometimes help in this step of purging as you figure out what furniture will fit in the new space and what pieces just won’t work. Take some important measurements and then choose to donate, sell or giveaway items that are just to big or that you won’t need anymore. You may also want to consider storage options if there are items that you just aren’t ready to give up, but that you also know won’t fit into your new home on an everyday basis.
