Set the Table. Break the Rules
A less predictable take on Thanksgiving.
There’s a brief, beautiful moment before everyone arrives when the table looks exactly the way you intended. The glasses are lined up, the napkins haven’t moved, the candles are untouched and nobody has put a serving dish directly on top of the carefully placed decorative thing you spent ten minutes arranging.
Enjoy it. It won’t last.
And really, that’s the point. Thanksgiving isn’t about creating a table that remains perfectly styled. It’s about creating one that makes people want to pull up a chair. So this year, why not loosen things up a little. Less worrying about what a Thanksgiving table is supposed to look like and more mixing, layering and using things we genuinely love.
First Rule: There Aren’t Any
Somewhere along the way, Thanksgiving acquired a fairly strict dress code. Orange. Brown. Pumpkins. Leaves. Repeat.
We’d like to expand the guest list.
Amber glass, smoky neutrals, crisp white, black, silver, gold, natural wood, they can all feel beautifully fall when they’re layered together. Start with what already works in your home rather than introducing an entirely new personality for October. Add a little warmth, something tactile and perhaps a pumpkin or two if the mood strikes. Your house can acknowledge Thanksgiving without dressing up as Thanksgiving.

Mix Your Metals. We Won’t Tell.
Remember when we were supposed to choose between silver and gold and remain loyal forever? Thankfully, we’ve moved on.

Mixing metals gives a table depth, particularly when there are other textures involved. Gold flatware against woven placemats, silver beside warm glass, polished surfaces mixed with wood or linen – it keeps everything from feeling too coordinated. The trick is simply to repeat a finish here and there so it feels intentional.

In other words, you want collected over time, not we accidentally combined two tables five minutes before dinner. Although, if it looks good, we won’t tell anyone that either.
Put Something on the Table That Has Absolutely Nothing to Do With Thanksgiving
Not every object needs to arrive carrying a pumpkin.
In fact, some of the best seasonal tables start with pieces that aren’t seasonal at all. A sculptural bowl, a favourite vase, an interesting tray or something normally sitting on your coffee table can become the starting point. Add a branch, a few candles or one small nod to fall and suddenly it makes perfect sense.

It’s also a much easier way to decorate because you aren’t reinventing your home every three months. You’re simply looking at what you already have and giving it a different job for the evening.
We are very much in favour of making the decor work harder.
Use the Good Stuff
Most of us have at least one of these: the bowl that’s too beautiful for mashed potatoes, the glasses we’re slightly nervous to hand to certain family members or the serving platter that apparently requires a sufficiently important occasion.
We have good news. Thanksgiving qualifies.
Beautiful things are meant to be used. Fill the bowl. Pour the wine. Pass the platter. Let your favourite pieces become part of the evening rather than spending another holiday safely tucked away in a cupboard.

We can even help with that. Take that beautiful gold-accented porcelain bowl above. It may look far too pretty to fill with salad on a regular Tuesday, but that’s exactly the point. Use it. Enjoy it. Then put it in the dishwasher. Beautiful and practical can absolutely be the same thing.
Ask us about our gold-accented porcelain collection in store. We’ll tell you more about why we love it in the next section.
Let the Cookware Come to the Table
Some things are simply too good-looking to stay in the kitchen. Thanksgiving is one of those meals where the cookware and serving pieces can become part of the table itself. A colourful Dutch oven filled with something warm and comforting adds an unexpected hit of colour among all those autumn neutrals and saves you from transferring everything into another dish just because company is coming.

The same goes for beautiful bakeware. Our porcelain bakeware with gold accents is designed to go from oven to table, so the dish you baked in can also be the one you proudly serve from. It’s oven safe to 500°F, freezer and dishwasher safe, stain resistant and tarnish free. In other words, it looks special enough for Thanksgiving, without needing to be treated like it only comes out for special occasions.

And this is just a taste of what you’ll find at Modern Accents. Our kitchen and entertaining collection goes well beyond cookware, with design-forward serving pieces, beautiful knives, serving utensils, flatware and those little details that make everything you bring to the table look that much better.

Rethink the Centrepiece
The traditional Thanksgiving centrepiece can sometimes feel a little… expected. Instead of one enormous arrangement taking over the table, try a sculptural vase, a few beautiful branches, candles and smaller seasonal pieces layered throughout. Or have a little fun with each place setting – a sculptural object, beautiful napkin ring or unexpected seasonal detail can become its own mini focal point. It still feels abundant and considered, but leaves room for conversation and, importantly, the food

Of course, that rule goes out the window if you’re styling the table purely for looks. If you’re not actually serving a meal there this Thanksgiving, go big. This is your chance for an oversized arrangement, dramatic branches or something wonderfully sculptural that turns the whole table into a moment. No one needs to see across it. No one needs somewhere to put the gravy. Make the statement.

Fall Can Whisper
Seasonal decorating doesn’t have to announce itself from across the room.
Sometimes a few velvet pumpkins tucked onto a tray are enough. Amber glass catches that gorgeous fall light. Branches bring in a bit of the outdoors. Pinecones and leaves add texture without asking you to pack away half the living room to make space for them.

We love fall décor most when it slips naturally into everything else that’s already there. Your home should still feel like your home, just slightly warmer, a little moodier and ready for dinner to stretch well past dessert.
And Then, Mess It Up
Here’s where a good Thanksgiving table gets even better.

People arrive. Wine is poured. Serving bowls appear from every direction. Someone moves the carefully positioned pumpkin because that’s where they want to put the gravy. Chairs get pulled closer. Napkins stop behaving. The candles burn down.

And the table you spent all that time making beautiful slowly disappears underneath dinner.
Success.
Because ultimately, we’re not setting tables just to look at them. We’re setting them for conversations that run long, second helpings, people reaching across one another and someone inevitably asking if there’s any more turkey.
Set the Table. Then Forget About It.
So this Thanksgiving, give yourself permission to make it a little less perfect. Mix the silver with the gold. Bring out the bowl you’ve been saving. Put something unexpected on the table. Add a pumpkin if you want one, or don’t.
Make it beautiful because that’s part of the fun. Then light the candles, pour something good and let everyone mess it up.
After all, a perfectly styled table is lovely. A table nobody wants to leave is better.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Modern Accents.
